This spectacular Waratah flower was taken by Darren Edwards, a renowned Blue Mountains Photographer. Darren took this image at our property in Blackheath over 6 years ago. It is without a doubt one of our favourite waratah images.
The Waratah is the floral emblem for NSW. The generic name Telopea is derived from the Greek ‘telopos‘, meaning ‘seen from afar’, and refers to the great distance from which the crimson flowers are discernible. The specific name speciosissima is the superlative of the Latin adjective ‘speciosus‘, meaning ‘beautiful’ or ‘handsome’. ‘Waratah’, the Aboriginal name for the species, was adopted by early settlers at Port Jackson. We are very lucky in the Blue Mountains to see these magnificent blooms every spring and the Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens have a Waratah Festival where they are seen in all their glory. The Waratah Puzzles can be ordered in all seven jigsaw puzzle options.
