    One of the shyest of birds, they are quite spectacular and rarely seen.  Many Australians have never seen one.  They are a small, stocky cockatoo with a wispy crest, large, broad wings and a short tail.  The adult male has a distinctive scarlet red head and crest, with the rest of the body slate-grey.  You always know when they’re around, you’ll hear the sound of a creeking door!!
